American photographer Olivia Locher bundles the most absurd laws that still exist in the United States in her book ‘I Fought the law’. It all started with an ice cream. A friend told her that in the state of Alabama it’s illegal to put an ice cream in your back pocket. Locher was so fascinated by this that she devoted a whole photo collection to it. And that collection can be found in the new edition of the Snoecks calendar.
Many of these absurd laws still apply, because it takes too much effort and it costs too much to have them removed. Most of those laws have a special reason why they exist that is totally not relevant anymore these days, but sometimes they’re still useful. In 1926 the state of New York for example introduced a law that prohibited people to dance in bars. Upon this day police still uses this law to close bars when there are problems.
We’ll go through some of the absurd laws she mentions in her book.
